Will American Auto Insurance Work Overseas?

dreamstimefree_3960416You have probably had your insurance policy for several years. Some people stay with the same company for their entire life! But, do you really know the finer points of your policy? Changes are that if you have never had to make a claim on it, you have no idea how your policy works, what it covers, and more importantly, what it doesn’t cover. Did you know that most American auto insurance policies will not cover you the minute you drive over the border into another country?

American auto insurance companies do not want to be held liable for drivers in other countries. Because you will be driving in a country where not everyone is insured, they know that they will be hit with a big bill if someone hits you, or you hit someone else. So, they usually omit foreign driving from your policy.

If you are planning on going to another country, either with your car, or driving another car while you are there, be sure that you have the right kind of insurance before you go. There are some American auto insurance companies that will allow you to add a “rider” to your policy, allowing you to drive overseas for a fixed period of time – usually a week or less. You can also buy an insurance policy at the border that is in force sometimes for just a day or two.

But, by adding foreign insurance to your normal auto insurance policy, you will probably save a lot more money, especially if you regularly drive across the border. Specifically if you live in a border town, neighboring Mexico or Canada, by adding foreign insurance to your normal policy, you will never have to worry about whether or not you are insured when you get to the other country.
